Quartz Stone vs Laminate Table Top: Which Suits Your Kitchen?

For most Malaysian homes, put quartz stone in the wet kitchen and use laminate (HPL) in the dry kitchen or pantry. Quartz handles heat, stains, water and knocks far better. Laminate costs much less, looks warmer, and is fine where the cooking is light. AmpQuartz (2026) prices quartz at about RM70 to RM190 per square foot in Malaysia.

There is no reliable published per-square-foot figure for laminate tops, because most cabinet makers include it in the cabinet price. As a guide, our compact 10-ft kitchen with base and wall cabinets and a laminate top starts from about RM 9,000.

What exactly is a quartz stone table top?

A quartz table top is engineered stone: around 90 to 95% crushed natural quartz bound with resin and pigment, pressed into slabs. That mix makes it harder and less porous than most natural stone. It does not need sealing.

Because the slab is made, the colour is even from one end to the other. Plain whites and greys are the most affordable. Marble-look patterns with long veins cost more and need careful planning so the veins line up at joints.

The resin is the one weak spot. A wok taken straight off a high flame and set down on quartz can leave a pale or yellowed mark. A trivet or a steel hob-side rest avoids that.

What is a laminate table top made of?

A laminate table top is a thin high-pressure laminate (HPL) sheet glued onto a thick board, usually plywood or particleboard. The HPL is layers of kraft paper and resin pressed under heat, with a printed design on top. That printed layer is why laminate can copy oak, walnut, concrete or stone.

The flat surface is waterproof and easy to wipe. The board underneath is not. If water sits in a joint or creeps under the edge at the sink cut-out, the board can swell, and the top lifts or bubbles. That is why the base board and the sealing matter more than the laminate pattern.

Laminate also feels softer and quieter. Plates do not clatter, and a dropped glass is less likely to break.

Which table top is better for a wet kitchen or a dry kitchen?

Quartz is the better choice for a Malaysian wet kitchen, and laminate is usually enough for a dry kitchen. The split follows how each room is used.

Wet kitchen. This is where the wok, the steamer, the pestle and mortar and the big pots live. Water splashes around the sink all day. Quartz shrugs off oil, turmeric and standing water, and it takes the weight of heavy pots without denting.

Dry kitchen and pantry. Here the top holds a kettle, a coffee machine, a toaster and some light prep. Laminate copes well, costs less, and a wood-grain finish can match the cabinets and shelves around it.

Where do granite and solid surface fit in?

Granite and solid surface are the other two tops people ask about, and both have a narrower use than quartz or laminate.

Granite is natural stone. It handles heat well, but it is more porous than quartz and usually needs sealing to keep stains out. Quality varies a lot. AmpQuartz (2026) shows granite slabs spanning roughly RM10 to RM500 per square foot, depending on grade, colour and origin.

Solid surface (acrylic, such as Corian) can be joined with almost no visible seam and moulded into a sink. It is softer than quartz, so it scratches more easily, though light scratches can be sanded out. It does not like hot pans either.

How much does a kitchen table top cost in 2026?

Quartz costs about RM70 to RM190 per square foot in Malaysia (AmpQuartz, 2026), and laminate is the cheapest top, usually bundled into the cabinet price. Thickness, pattern, edge profile and the number of cut-outs push quartz towards the top of that band.

When comparing quotes, check each one prices the same things: top area, thickness, edge finish, sink and hob cut-outs, splashback or upstand, delivery and installation.

5 checks before you pick a slab

Search results will tell you quartz beats laminate. They will not tell you what goes wrong on the day the top is fitted. Run through these five checks first.

1. See the full slab, not a small sample. Veins and colour shift across a slab. Ask for a photo of the actual slab, or visit the supplier, before cutting.
2. Ask where the joints will be. A long run or an L-shape usually needs a joint. Keep it away from the sink and hob, and ask how the veins will meet.
3. Confirm the cut-outs. Undermount or top-mount sink, hob size and tap position must be fixed before the top is cut. Changing them later is costly.
4. Check the cabinet underneath. A quartz top is heavy. The carcass needs to be level and strong, especially across the sink opening. We build on a plywood carcass for this reason.
5. Read what the price includes. Thickness, edge profile, splashback, delivery, installation and silicone sealing should all be written down.
