Property type: Family home
This is a child's bedroom in a family home in Seremban, fitted out in pastels: a full-height lilac wardrobe run with open shelves in yellow and orange, and a lilac dressing table under the window. The carcasses are plywood with a laminate finish, made in our workshop in Galla Industrial Park and driven across town to be installed.
This job is unusual because we have photographs of the same parts at both ends. The workshop strip further down shows the carcasses and the desk top on our floor before delivery. The gallery shows them installed, with the child already living in the room.
What is in the room
- Wardrobe run
- Full-height lilac and pink doors along one wall. The doors are kept plain so the room can grow up with the child.
- Open shelves
- The colour goes inside. Yellow and orange shelves are set into the wardrobe run, so the brightest part of the room is in the storage rather than on the doors.
- Dressing table
- A lilac desk top with drawers under the window, with a lit star-shaped mirror fixed above it. In the workshop photograph it is already assembled, with the plywood drawer boxes in and the fronts not yet on.
Colour inside, plain outside
A room built for a young child has to survive the child getting older. Putting the strong colours on the shelves and the inside faces, and keeping the wardrobe doors to soft pastels, means the room still works in a few years when the cartoon bedding is gone. Inside the cabinets, the colour shows when the doors open. From outside, the fronts stay easy to live with.
Every coloured edge had to be matched to its board. Edge banding is the strip that seals a cut panel edge, and in a room with this many colours each strip is matched to its panel before it goes on. The carcasses were then dry-fitted in the workshop to check sizes and door swings before loading. Some trimming still happened on site, as it nearly always does, because walls are never perfectly straight and floors are not always level.
Built in our workshop
The same parts, before they left Seremban
These are this room's own carcasses and dressing table in our workshop. They are edged and dry-fitted here first, so the sizes and the doors are checked before the lorry is loaded. On site there is usually still some trimming, because walls are never perfectly straight.
