IKEA's METOD kitchen is a fair choice for a standard-sized dry kitchen, a rental, or an owner who wants a fixed price and is happy to plan it themselves. For a Malaysian wet kitchen with heavy cooking, odd wall lengths or a gas cylinder to hide, custom plywood cabinets usually fit better and last longer. On price the two are closer than most people expect once installation and fillers are added to IKEA.
In short:
- IKEA Malaysia shows one example METOD kitchen at RM10,840 (2026), appliances and installation not included.
- IKEA states its METOD frames are particleboard with melamine foil. We build carcasses in plywood with a laminate finish.
- IKEA modules come in set widths. A custom kitchen is drawn to your exact wall.
- METOD carries a 25-year guarantee on defects, per IKEA Malaysia.
- A mix (IKEA in the dry kitchen, plywood in the wet kitchen) is a sensible option for some homes.
What does an IKEA kitchen cost in Malaysia?
IKEA Malaysia's own campaign page shows one example METOD kitchen at RM10,840, including cabinets, fronts, worktop, interior organisers, hinges, plinths, drawers, handles, sink, tap and water trap. Lighting and appliances are sold separately.
Installation is extra. IKEA Malaysia's installation page states the kitchen installation fee is 15% of the products' original retail price, with a minimum charge, and appliance installation is charged per item. The same page says moving or adding gas, electrical and water points is not included.
For custom cabinets, AmpQuartz (2026) lists plywood at RM330 to RM600 per running foot and melamine at RM290 to RM600. Our own published starting point is about RM 9,000 for a compact 10-ft kitchen with base and wall cabinets and a laminate top. Bigger or L-shaped kitchens with quartz or sintered stone tops commonly run RM15,000 to RM50,000.
These numbers do not describe the same kitchen, so they are not a like-for-like comparison. Ask for two full written quotes for your own floor plan. Our kitchen cabinet price per foot guide explains how to read a per-foot quote.
Custom kitchen vs IKEA: how do they compare?
The biggest differences are the carcass board, how the cabinets fit your wall, and who carries the risk if something does not fit.
| IKEA METOD | Custom plywood (how we build) | |
|---|---|---|
| Carcass board | Particleboard with melamine foil; fibreboard back (IKEA Malaysia product page) | Plywood carcass, laminate (HPL) finish |
| Sizes | Set modules: base 20, 40, 60, 80 cm wide; wall cabinets 40, 60 or 80 cm high; tall units 200 or 220 cm | Any width, height and depth, drawn to the measured wall |
| Uneven walls, odd lengths | Gaps closed with cover panels or fillers | Cabinets sized to the space; scribed where needed |
| Hood, hob, gas cylinder | Standard cut-outs and units; cylinder space needs planning around modules | Hob, hood and a ventilated cylinder bay planned into the drawing |
| Wet kitchen water | Foil and edging protect the board; damage starts where water gets in | Plywood copes with damp better; cut edges sealed |
| Planning | Free in-store or online session, or the IKEA Kitchen Planner | Workshop measures on site and draws every cabinet |
| Installation | Self-install, or IKEA service at 15% of retail price (minimum applies) | Same team that built the cabinets installs them |
| Lead time | Stock items can be bought straight away if available | Built after the drawing is approved; ask for a written date |
| Warranty | 25 years on METOD defects; 10 years on ENHET (IKEA Malaysia) | Agree terms in writing with the workshop |
| Price direction | Fixed list prices, plus appliances, install and site work | Per running foot plus top; fewer fillers and loose panels |
Will IKEA modules fit a Malaysian kitchen?
IKEA modules fit well when the wall is straight and its length works with the 20 cm steps of the METOD range. Many Malaysian terrace houses have walls that are not quite square, a column in the corner, or a window that sits off-centre.
When a wall does not divide into module widths, the leftover space is closed with a filler strip or cover panel. A few centimetres is fine. A gap of 15 to 20 cm at each end is lost storage.
Malaysian kitchens also need room for things IKEA plans do not always assume: a gas cylinder under the hob, a large chimney hood for wok cooking, and sometimes a washing machine in the wet kitchen. A custom drawing puts these in from the start.

Is IKEA particleboard durable in a wet kitchen?
IKEA's particleboard is fine while its foil and edges stay sealed, but it does not recover once water gets in. A swollen bottom panel under the sink or a puffed edge beside the mop area has to be replaced, not repaired.
A Malaysian wet kitchen is hard on any cabinet. Steam from wok cooking, a sink used all day and a floor mopped daily all push moisture into the lowest 10 cm of the box. That is where particleboard fails first.
Plywood is not waterproof either, but it is built from cross-laid wood layers and holds screws better when damp. We seal every cut edge and lift the base cabinets on legs so mop water does not sit against the board.
Termites are another local risk. Any wood-based board, plywood included, can be attacked. Raised legs and a clear gap under the cabinets make it easier to spot trouble early. Our material selection guide compares boards in more detail.

When does an IKEA kitchen make sense?
An IKEA kitchen makes sense when the room is standard, the use is light, and you value a fixed list price and quick availability. It is a reasonable choice in these cases:
- You rent, or you plan to move in a few years.
- The kitchen is a dry kitchen with light cooking.
- Your walls are straight and the lengths suit 20 cm module steps.
- You are comfortable planning the layout yourself and handling the plumbing and electrical work through someone else.
- Your timeline is tight and the parts you need are in stock.
IKEA's 25-year METOD guarantee is a real plus. Just note it covers defects in material and workmanship, not water damage from daily use.
When is a custom plywood kitchen the better choice?
Custom plywood cabinets are the better choice for a wet kitchen with daily heavy cooking, for walls that do not match module sizes, and for owners who plan to stay in the house for many years.
Custom also helps when you want storage that standard modules do not offer, such as a full-height pantry with pull-out racks, a gas cylinder bay, or an appliance tower built to the exact size of your oven.
A pull-out pantry we built to use a narrow, full-height space.
A hybrid also works. Some owners put IKEA units in the dry kitchen, where looks and price matter most, and custom plywood in the wet kitchen, where water and heat do the damage. Our kitchen layout guide helps you decide what goes where.
What should you check before you buy either one?
Whichever route you take, get these answers in writing before paying:
- Measured wall lengths, including where columns, windows and pipes sit.
- Carcass board for every cabinet, and how the cut edges are sealed.
- Whether base cabinets stand on legs, and the leg height.
- Hob and hood sizes, and where the gas cylinder goes.
- Who moves the water, gas and power points, and what that costs.
- Whether the price includes the worktop, sink, tap, installation and delivery.
- Warranty terms, what they exclude, and how to claim.
- An installation date.

Common questions about this topic
How much is an IKEA kitchen in Malaysia in 2026?
IKEA Malaysia shows one example METOD kitchen with STENSUND fronts at RM10,840 on its campaign page (2026). That figure covers cabinets, fronts, worktop, sink, tap and fittings, but not appliances or lighting. IKEA Malaysia's kitchen installation fee is a separate 15% of the products' original retail price, with a minimum charge.
What are IKEA kitchen cabinets made of?
IKEA Malaysia's product page for the METOD base cabinet frame lists the frame as particleboard with melamine foil and plastic edging, and the back panel as fibreboard with paper foil. Legs, doors, shelves, hinges and plinths are sold separately. A custom workshop can build the same box in plywood instead.
Is an IKEA kitchen good for a Malaysian wet kitchen?
It can work in a dry kitchen or a light-cooking kitchen, but it is a weaker choice for a wet kitchen with daily wok frying and floor mopping. Particleboard swells if water gets past the foil or an edge, and a swollen panel cannot be repaired. For the wet side, a plywood carcass with sealed edges and raised legs holds up better.
Does IKEA give a warranty on kitchen cabinets in Malaysia?
Yes. IKEA Malaysia's guarantee page states a 25-year guarantee covering defects in material and workmanship on the METOD kitchen system, and a 10-year guarantee on the ENHET kitchen system. Appliances carry a separate 5-year guarantee. Read the conditions: it covers defects, not damage from water or wear.
Is a custom kitchen more expensive than IKEA in Malaysia?
Not always. AmpQuartz (2026) lists custom plywood cabinets at RM330 to RM600 per running foot, and Fatt Interior's compact 10-ft kitchen with a laminate top starts from about RM 9,000. An IKEA package needs appliances, installation and any plumbing changes added on top, so compare full written quotes, not headline prices.
